After 31 years of service, I was let go at the height of the recession. There was an unwritten rule at the time that displaced employees were not to be re-hired. I had subsequently tried to re-apply with no success.

I worked for American Express for over 20 years and never had a bad review. At age 55 I was diagnosed with cancer. Once my treatments were complete, and I was back to working 50-55 hours per week I was written up for any transgression they could think of. I was asked to train workers in India to do my job. Within 8 months they forced me to retire or be fired. No package and no medical coverage except COBRA, which was close to $2k per month. I was a non-contract employee and exempt from receiving overtime while I worked there. According to lawyers I spoke with I could not bring them to court because of the non-contract status in an "at-will" state.

Older employees are the first to be laid off so that younger, inexperienced, cheaper staff can be hired. Age is not valued here.

Testimonials:

After reading the comments by those who express their perspective of age related discriminating practices by more than a few employers, I felt very concerned for older workers that need/desire employment. I wonder if these employers understand that it is not just the revenue from young adults that keep them in business. I wonder how they would survive if the older generation would stop supporting their businesses. I also wonder if these employers understand the principle of sowing and reaping? I am grateful to your agency for providing the results of your survey and your commitment to provide older workers with reliable job leads.
